Standing on the way out of the village of Yukawa and back into the mountains, Inohana Oji is a psychological turning point where one begins to become strongly aware of Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. The view is narrow and the scenery is not dramatic. It is precisely for this reason that one’s attention turns to one’s footsteps, breathing, and one’s own inner self, and it is a place where the meaning of pilgrimage quietly sinks in. Beyond this point, the path converges towards the Hongu Shrine, and pilgrims begin to cherish the time they have traveled rather than the thought of “reaching the destination.” Oji Shrine is a place of quiet determination, fitting for the final stage of the Nakahechi route.
